@eloiseangus ahaha a lot of it is interacting with people! stuff like "hi, i'm ___ and I loved reading your work ___. ___ and ___ are just so cute together <3" it helps a lot to vote and comment on people's works and make friends. also a big no no is advertising on other people's pages or worse, books, because it's generally rude unless you ask politely & they specify that they take requests. but honestly, followers shouldn't matter and you should enjoy what you're doing! hope this helps, Vicky :)
