happy Tuesday, nerds! today kept me busy, and I still have evening lab (in about 20 minutes... yikes), here a couple pieces of info for you!
          
          - today's chemistry fact, of course. Did you know... during halohydrin formation, the halogen will typically bond to the least substituted carbon, and the alcohol will bind to the most substituted carbon (breaking the one alkene bond)? This is Markinikov's rule! However, it is possible to switch the places of the halogen and the alcohol... How to know which one you made in the lab? Test it! It's called the Chromic Acid test and you use something called the Jones reagent. If your product turns orange, you've made Markinikov's product. If it turns blue, you made the anti-markinikov's product! What inspired me to share this with you? I successfully synthesize a markinikov product in lab this morning! YIPPEE!!!
          
          - in other news: my birthday is in a month! yay me! another year!
          
          - I might be able to get a chapter of wildflowers out tonight, depends on how late my studying goes... I have an exam tmr... yikes.
          
          - im thinking about switching my major, as interesting as chemistry is, I also LOVE biology... biochemistry maybe? I just dont want my schedule to be packed with all chem for the next 2 years...

good morning, happy sunday (unfortunately that means tmr is Monday… sigh)! a few things to start the week off:
          
          - I did good on my promise and slept pretty much all day yesterday, BUT I actually did get some lab work done (cheer for me pls)
          
          - i plan on spending my day today doing the rest of my work, BUT a new chapter of wildflowers is in revision and may be posted tonight (yippee!) 
          
          - I don’t post much on my instagram story, but I posted a picture of an ice protest and within an hour I lost like 20 followers… thank you for letting yourselves out you bigoted pieces of shit
          
          - and finally, what you’ve all been waiting for… chemistry fun fact! Did you know…  Sodium (Na) is an explosive metal, and Chlorine (Cl) is a very toxic gas? Well, put them together —> NaCl. NaCl is table salt. Putting an explosive metal and toxic gas together allows you to salt your french fries. Ofc, there’s more to it chemically, but that just about sums it up!

          - not to toot my own horn but… toot toot! Wildflowers might be my best work yet and you guys have NO IDEA what’s in store… so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

          - anyways, i said i plan to sleep all weekend, and that’s starting now!

little life update since I disappeared for a couple days there! 
          
          - oh my god this week felt like an entire year. im a sophomore in college, and I genuinely miss my dog so much its making me sick. I feel like im in mourning. its not like this is my first time not living at home either, idk maybe I should register him as an emotional support animal and bring him to school...
          
          - I just binged The Pitt (on Hulu/hbo, totally recommend), and I genuinely am so excited for medical school it's not even funny.
          
          - I have no fun chemistry fact for today, my brain is absolutely academically fried. I cannot wait to sleep all weekend and fall behind on my work. genuinely stoked. 
          
          - anyways, I should be able to post the next chapter of wildflowers tonight! be on the lookout...

I hope everyone's Monday is going just swell; personally, I cannot wait to go to bed tonight. 
          
          - chemistry fact for today: Did you know... Mexican yams played a huge part in the synthesis of birth control? It has very high concentrations of a chemical called "diosgenin." Russel Marker, a scientist, used this to chemically synthesize progesterone. if you've had your hands in a chemistry lab (college level), you've probably heard of "Marker degradation," the process he created to get progesterone from diosgenin! I was fascinated when I learned about the history of birth control!
          
          - speaking of birth control... I've been on the pill for about a year and a half. It's not common, but it does happen, that women with curly hair may lose that texture when they get pregnant. Im on hormonal bc for my periods, and the thing I noticed within a few months (besides getting my period, obvi) was that my curls/waves began to become less and less noticeable. My hair still has some wave to it, but it's a completely different hair type. If there's anything I can do to get my hair back, im willing to try anything </3 for reference, I went from a 2b(ish) to like a mix of 1c/2a...
          
          - anyways... I should be able to get a chapter out tn!
          
          - I like to tell myself that I'll get ahead on my school work. realistically, it aint happening. but I always get it done on time so whatever works.
          
          - this storm was not what they hyped it up to be, I've literally been through worse I dont even know how many times. so I still had classes today.

unfortunately, it is Sunday evening... which means tomorrow is Monday, which means the weekend is over. sigh. 
          
          - chemistry fun fact!: Did you know... honey can never go bad? honey is fairly acidic with a pH of 3.1-4.4. It also is very hygroscopic (doesn't contain much water). These factors make honey very inhospitable for bacterias and fungi! The fact that it contains very little water allows it to draw out any moisture from any present bacteria or fungi, killing them. Honey may begin to look different over time, but it doesn't actually go "bad." its very interesting, I suggest looking into it!
          
          - this week is going to keep me busy like a bee. im actually scared for how much work i have to do. but I guess that's what I get for wanting to be a doctor...
          
          - I should be able to get a chapter out tonight, if not, definitely tmr (writing a bunch in one sitting is lowkey the strat).
          
          - I hope everyone is staying warm due to the weather, and safe due to the other type of ice coming down on us...
