@ericdabbs Personally, I think you should do what inspires you. There are some writers who always plan, plan, plan and write to completion, but that doesn't work for every writer.
Dig deep inside yourself and ask yourself, "Is this a shiny new idea that has just flitted through my mind? Or is this a new passion that has gripped me and won't let go?" A wise person can tell the difference.
You know what I do when I'm not sure I want to commit what might be 1-3 years of my life to a project?
I write a short story.
I flirt with the idea, play with it, bounce it around in my brain. Try it on for size and see if it fits. You could share it or not as you see fit, but see if it settles in the theatre of your mind or if it grabs you and doesn't let go.
A short story is kind of like dating for the mind. It allows you to see if it has potential.
