          ares always had those thoughts of 'oh hey, i am not attracted to women. men, however, reign superior in my head' but he was terrified to admit it. 
          he was terrified because of the centuries he 'grew up' in, he was terrified of how people would treat him. would they be accepting, or would they try to kill him? 
          that's why he's so sarcastic, and snappy, and so closed off- so unwilling to open up. he thought something was wrong with him, he thought arisham had mistakenly made ares feel attracted to men so that when ares found that out about himself, he would be sent back to arisham & have his memory wiped. 
          ares only came out of the closet to the world (and was proud) in the 1980's, before then, when he'd 'make the mistake' of coming out to somebody he liked, he would be beaten, he would be made fun of- druig wasn't there to protect him, which causes turbulence later on.

          she wound up in the hospital around the same time as beth greene for a minor head injury.   only days later,    she left the hospital with rick's group,    but without beth.    secrets haunted her at every turn,   but she did her best to survive,   and did that for a really long time.
          
          then the saviors became an issue.    several things about yelena's past came back to get her:     negan had helped to raise her & was like a father to the young yelena,    she had a past romance with dwight that never really got broken off,    and before the apocalypse,    she was an ASSASSIN.   the group didn't know whether they could trust her,   but carl grimes was the one to give her the benefit of the doubt.
          
          *  she IS inspired by yelena belova from the marvel cinematic universe, do not say that i am copying her, i am simply taking inspiration from the character.
