Excerpt: "Back in Chambers, Lace had been raised as a Southern Baptist- not that they were regular attendees. Alcoholic mothers and abusive fathers don't make it to morning services very often. But they hit the high holidays, Christmas and Easter. Asked for forgiveness. They even "came on down" to the front of their church to promise to "rededicate their lives to Jesus." For a few days, Momma would be attentive and kind. Daddy reserved and respectful. But it never lasted long. Soon, Momma would be on another bender and Daddy would be back to knocking her around. It was one of the things that had turned Lace away from the church.
Crappy people didn't change.
But when you were cursed, you saw a specialist. And the only place to find that was the church. She figured the oldest one in town was a good place to start."
