he was passing through , same as always — new town , same worn jacket , same list of things to check and clear before moving on . he didn’t do lingering . didn’t do detours . kept his head down and his eyes forward and that was usually enough .
except .
there was a young girl sitting on the steps outside a closed shop , completely alone , and something about it snagged at him in a way he couldn’t immediately name . not the fact that she was a kid by herself at this hour , though that was strange enough . it was something else .
he slowed without meaning to . kept walking but cut a glance sideways — dark curls , small hands folded in her lap , eyes that didn’t move the way a child’s eyes moved . no fidgeting . no phone . just . . . waiting . like she had all the time in the world and then some .
the back of his neck did that thing .
he stopped . looked at her properly now , one hand loose at his side , close enough to the knife on his belt that it wasn’t casual but wasn’t obvious either .
“ kind of late to be sitting outside alone , “ he said . easy tone . the kind he used when he didn’t want to spook something before he knew what it was .
his eyes didn’t leave her face .

the silence had stretched too long and benjamin didn’t move , didn’t take his hand off the knife nor did not step back or didn’t blink . but he just let the dare rot in the air between them .
then something that wasn’t quite a laugh scraped out of him but the sounded like gravel and rust .
“ worse than me . ” he responded as he turned the knife once in his hand , and it was slow . “ alright . ” he crouched down to her eye level — not gentle, not threatening , just even . the way a man crouches down to look at a trap he hasn’t decided whether to step around yet . “ i ain’t gonna argue that . world’s full of worse things than me . met most of ’em. ” his eyes stayed on hers . steady . worn out in a way that had nothing to do with tired . “ but worse things tend to leave marks . . and you’re still here, so either you’re tougher than you look —” a pause. ”— or you got real good at runnin’ . ”
he didn’t raise the knife just held it loose , visible , honest about what it was.
“ i’m not gonna try it , ” he said , it was quieter now . not so soft . just done performing . “ not the point anymore . ” he studied her face the way he studied terrain — looking for what didn’t fit . “ point is you’re out here . alone . huntin’ . and somebody oughta be askin’ why . “
there was a pause .
“ you hungry ? ”
just that . with no explanation . he’s been around enough to know that something wearing a child’s face that’s been hunting in this city has needs , even if they’re not the kind you feed with a sandwich .

the expression on claudia’s face soured almost immediately after the stranger began replying . he was good . this man wasn’t a normal mortal that she could fool or perhaps , he was not mortal at all ? his threats did not scare her though , at least not yet . she stayed in her spot as he came closer to her , simply moving from a sitting position to a standing one . ” and what d’ya think will happen when a mortal stumbles upon you killin’ an innocent little girl ? ” a pout appeared on her face for a second before it disappeared , fire appearing in her eyes . “ you think i don’t know that already ? i ‘ave already had my fair share of bad things happenin’ to me an’ they were far more frightenin’ than some creepy little man with a knife . ” she answered . “ so . try it , i dare you . ”

he didn’t let his hand drop from his belt , keeping his fingers resting just a fraction of an inch away from the grip of his knife . the girl was good — the sweet voice and the line about her daddy would’ve fooled anyone else , but benjamin had been tracking things that bumped in the night for a way long to fall for a pair of wide eyes . a low , gravelly chuckle scraped past his lips as he held her gaze , his expression completely unreadable . “ right . your daddy . “ he muttered , his tone dripping with a quiet , dangerous amusement as he took one slow step closer to the steps . “ well , you tell your daddy that if he’s let’s say... a couple decades late , he might wanna hurry up . because from where i’m standing , you look less like a lost kid and more like something i usually have to put a blade through . and . . y’know little girl . i think you need to be careful where you go even when you could just stay with him instead because in the dark bad things can happen even you .. “
