As a 17 year old female student, I am heartbroken by the things that are happening in my country, South Africa. I think it's important for the rest of the world to know what's happening. South Africa needs the support.
1. Xenophobic attacks. My heart goes out to families that have been attacked or their loved ones killed. Violence and looting is wreaking havoc in Gauteng. People have been shot and injured -the chaos still ensues. Migrant-rich areas are being targeted but the violence has since then expanded. Parents are panicked and worried about the safety of their kids. Shops have been forced to close down. I pray that the violence and that peace will be restored to this country that seems to be falling apart. We must fight for all the victims. Our president needs to address the public and DO something.
2. Femicide. The numerous deaths over the past few weeks frighten me. And yes, they leave me wondering, "Am I next?" I see headlines "raped, butchered, murdered, battered" and I just think, "What is happening to this beautiful country?" A woman cannot even walk safely to the post office. Female students, teenagers, children, infants - women- are not safe in the streets of South Africa. We're careful not to dress "provocatively." We carry our pepper sprays. We walk in groups. Apparently, it's not enough. There are men in this country who have decided that only they have human rights. They believe that it is okay to steal a life, take an identity and dominate. When you rob someone of their God-given right to live, why should you have that right? Women lose their lives and futures while men are given a short jail sentence.
"I realise that not all men beat, brutalise, rape or murder but it's enough men for me to be scared of all men."
