i think ultimately stranger things is a show that just bought into its own hype, and that's what killed it (unfortunately the fate of most streaming shows that get really popular). the first season was a self-aware stephen king pastiche that payed homage without getting self-referential. the later season just straight up *became* a cheesy 80s movie with no irony

the stuff from season 1 that stuck with me the most wasn't the scary sci-fi parts. it wasn't the upside down, it wasn't the evil scientists, it wasn't the demogorgon. it was the bits that felt *real*. those scenes where joyce is arguing with will's dad or with johnathan and everyone is treating her like she's delusional. those flashbacks of hopper's daughter in the hospital. remember when this show was for adults?

'oh the cast is way too big because they keep introducing unnecessary new characters every season and never killing anyone off! previously important characters keep getting sidelined and nobody's character arcs ever get finished in a satisfying way! vecna is a stupid villain who killed every element of mystery the story once had! the constant need to add 'lore' about the upside down makes it much less scary because it detracts from the unknown cosmic horror! season 1 was a mature and grounded series about a mother searching for her missing child but now the show is just epic marvel nostalgiaslop!'
