Regarding the Zayn controversy, it's been quite obvious for a while that his heart hasn't been set on the band. He wasn't give any creative control and he must have felt like he was being someone he wasn't comfortable being. I don't buy the whole wants to live a normal life PR that 1D's press has been going on about. He wants to take creative control and do everything on his terms and he's more than earned the right to do so. I've been slowly losing interest in the band's music since I feel their albums as a whole are getting slightly worse though I do still really enjoy some of their more recent songs.
