Steve sat on the couch in the communal living room, reading a book about modern military strategies. It was 3:23 AM, the witching hour, as some would say. He heard footsteps, as light as kittens' meows, coming from the hallway. Steve sat up straight, his thumb in the middle of the book to keep track of the page number.
"Oh, hey, Carol. Can't sleep either?"
Restless nights were not exactly uncommon for the likes of Carol who rarely got a full twelve hours of sleep; she was lucky if she got twelve minutes of undisturbed slumber. The floor was cold against her feet and she greatly regretted leaving her dressing gown behind since her nightdress offered no real warmth, so she had decided to head to the communal living room and curl up a blanket.
To say that she was shocked to find Steve there would be a lie. She offered him a smile and moved towards the couch, sitting on the unoccupied end.
"Sleep, what's that?" She joked between a half-assed yawn, covering her mouth with her hand to supress it.
"What's got you up so early?"
