this is about jkr and the harry potter show, but mostly the subesequent barrage of hate toward writers/artists/creatives who engage with the fandom. as someone who has an hpu fic up, i feel like i should say something. obvious disclaimer: FUCK JKR FUCK PAYING FOR HER WORK!! STEAL!! PIRATE!!!!! do not give that creature money
summing up the main argument: interacting with problematic works in any capacity gives them cultural currency = more recognized = more money, but it's devolved into a circle of ppl pointing fingers at each other accusing them of supporting jkr like its a witch trial or something. (for clarity's sake i'm talking about fic writers specifically) ppl in the fandom who create are more often than not writing a revisionist version of hp completely detached from canon, erasing practically all trace of jkr's hand. they create FREE content for fans to consume outside of her clutches, this ofc goes hand in hand with the main argument against writing for hp, but starts a slippery slope that flattens important distinctions. what makes something endorsement vs. critique or reclaimation? if any interaction with a problematic work is considered support, then all forms of interaction are equally harmful? what media is acceptable to engage with, and at what point is all media unacceptable?
select marvel movies are funded by the american military (therefore monetary and complicit in the idea of forever wars, comperable to jkr's influence), asoiaf perpetuates orientalist beliefs that are still in circulation today, tlou is zionist propaganda, aot is japanese nationalist propaganda. everywhere you turn, there's another problematic media rearing its head. if you're going to stand for something, you better apply it to everything because most ppl i see villanizing hp writers are cherry picking. bottom line is, fandom spaces are here to rewrite and revise. ppl should be encouraged to keep creating in a time when artists are slienced. peace out HIYAH

TDLR: there's bigger fish to fry than people writing fanfic that revises all problematic aspects of a media. just don't buy anything officially produced by anyone mentioned... art is an expression of contemporary fears, frustrations, and goals. if fic is what gets you to put that out there, it means a lot more than you'd think
side note if people read your fic and go "i need to buy a 200+ dollar official hp bookset bc i read this person's fic" then they were probably going to spend the money on that eventually. or on something as equally terrible because they clearly don't give a damn about anything
