SUNSWALLOWING

"Go out with me."

For a moment, Roxy simply stared at him. Her heart hammered so violently against her ribs that she was certain he could hear it over the quiet hum of the garage, but the surprise slowly melted from her face into something softer—something unmistakably excited. A smile tugged at the corner of her lips despite every attempt to contain it, and she lowered her gaze briefly, almost bashful before those warm brown eyes found his again. "...A date," she repeated quietly, as though testing how the words sounded between them. A soft, breathless laugh escaped her. "Okay, corazón..." [My heart...] Her smile widened. "You officially have my attention."
She leaned back against the car, folding her arms in a poor attempt to appear more composed than she felt. "So..." One brow lifted with familiar mischief. "What exactly did you have in mind?" Her eyes narrowed playfully as she looked him over. "Dinner? Dancing? Some terrifyingly organized FBI itinerary you've been secretly planning?" Another quiet laugh slipped free before her expression softened again. "I'm saying yes, by the way." She paused, her smile turning almost impossibly warm. "In case the head injury made that unclear."

His hand raised and fell when he heard the hollow sound, lips parting to ask if she's alright but he stopped himself the moment their eyes met.
Mikhail swallowed, and quickly hid his hands in his pockets, watching how she straightened from beneath the hood of the car to point a finger directly at him. Like a gun raised, he felt his heart panic underneath it, and it took effort to form words and defend what he just said. "...A date." He breathed, and averted his eyes for a moment before looking at her. "Maybe I should have said it nicer. Go out with me, on a date." He shifted his weight from one foot to another, feeling the tension rise from his legs up to his shoulders. Then he crossed his arms into a tight lock. "It's far from a investigation."

A soft thunk echoed through the garage as her forehead met the underside of the open hood. She immediately brought a hand up to cradle the aching spot, blinking at him in stunned silence for a long moment before letting out a nervous, disbelieving laugh.
"...Did I hear you right," she asked slowly, one brow lifting, "or did I just give myself a brand-new concussion?" She stared at him another beat, searching his face for any sign he was joking. "...Wait." A finger pointed accusingly in his direction. "Are you asking me out... on a date?" Another pause. "Or is this some weird FBI way of asking me to help with work?" Her lips parted into an incredulous smile. "Because those are very different answers, corazón." [My heart.]

The silence lasted only seconds before the excuses began. He was grieving. He wasn't himself. You don't know what those last months were like. Roxanne, your father was sick. This isn't the time— Her expression didn't change. Their words simply washed over her, unable to reach whatever part of her had retreated somewhere far beyond that hallway. Her battered fingers slowly found the fabric of Mikhail's shirt again, curling into it without conscious thought—the smallest, quietest attempt to anchor herself to the only person in the house who hadn't asked her to explain her pain. "I can't do this," she breathed, so softly it was meant only for him. The voices rose around her again, but Roxy merely stared through the faces of the family she'd spent years running from. "Please..." Her grip tightened. "Just get me out of here."

Her eyes remained glassy and distant, their whites streaked red from crying, ruined eyeliner trailing down cheeks still damp with tears. Dark strands of hair clung to her face, and her lips remained slightly parted as though she'd forgotten what she was supposed to say. She looked frighteningly small beneath the weight of so many people suddenly demanding pieces of her—answers, explanations, apologies—when she had nothing left to give. Her gaze drifted once toward the shattered room behind them, toward the remains of Little Roxy scattered among broken glass and Eduardo's ruined accolades, before going vacant again. "He destroyed it," she finally whispered. The family quieted, if only for a heartbeat. Her voice was hollow. "Everything she left me." Another trembling breath entered her lungs. "He destroyed all of it." Her eyes found Elena then, but there was no anger left in them. That somehow made it worse. "And you all still worship him."

The bedroom door had barely opened before the family descended upon her. Elena reached her first, hands fluttering toward Roxanne's face and shoulders with frantic concern. "¡Dios mío, mija! ¿Qué hiciste?" [My God, sweetheart! What did you do?] Behind her came an immediate flood of overlapping voices. What happened? Is she hurt? Look at her hands. Roxanne, answer us. What did she do to the room? Someone gasped at the shattered glass. Another mourned one of Eduardo's broken trophies as though the man himself had been struck. Sofía stood farther back, visibly stunned, while one of her uncles stared openly at the wreckage with appalled disbelief. Concern quickly tangled with judgment until Roxy could no longer distinguish one voice from another. "She destroyed everything." "Those were her father's awards." "Look what she's done." "Just like Eduardo when she gets angry..." The words bled together into meaningless noise.
Roxanne stood in the center of it all and stared straight through them. She didn't flinch when Elena touched her cheek. Didn't react when another aunt took hold of one of her wrists and gasped at the bruises already blooming beneath her skin or the small cuts scattered across her swollen knuckles.
