"Is that the Chase you talked about?"

greazemnky

Roxy was still riding the high of her discovery, practically vibrating with energy as they pushed through the crowd. Whatever strange tension had existed back at the car had completely flown over her head, replaced by suspension diagrams and mental calculations. The second Mikhail asked about dealerships, her face lit up even further. “Probably.” She immediately hooked her arm through his without thinking about it. “I know a few places that might be able to source one, but honestly? Half the fun is hunting it down ourselves.” Her grin widened. “Plus then I get to complain the entire time and pretend the universe is personally inconveniencing me.” The thought seemed to delight her. “And if we find one, I could probably make it work. I’d have to reconfigure a few things, maybe move some weight around, but…” She glanced up at him and visibly brightened all over again. “You’re actually interested in this.” The realization seemed to catch her off guard. “Most people’s eyes glaze over after the first thirty seconds.” A laugh escaped her. “I swear, every time I start talking about cars around normal people, they look like they’re trapped in a hostage situation.” She nudged his arm lightly with hers. “You’re either really patient or completely insane, cariño.” [sweetheart] The smile she shot him afterward was warm enough to rival the afternoon sun. “Either way, I like having someone to drag into my terrible ideas.”

Roxy’s smile softened at that admission, her gaze lingering on him as the breeze played with the pink streaks in her hair. “Yeah, well…” she murmured, her voice quieter than usual, stripped of its teasing edge. “Most people don’t give me many reasons to smile either.” Her eyes wandered over his face then, unhurried and shameless in their admiration. The sunlight caught against the sharp lines of his features, turning the dark intensity he carried so effortlessly into something warmer, softer. She found herself studying every detail—the curve of his mouth, the strong line of his jaw, the way the golden afternoon light settled across his skin. It was unfair, really. How someone who spent so much of his life looking angry could look so breathtaking when he finally allowed himself peace. For a moment she simply watched him, committing the sight to memory while the world around them seemed to quiet. The realization settled warmly in her chest. Slowly, she shifted closer through the grass, close enough that the space between them almost disappeared. “You know…” A faint laugh escaped her. “For someone who acts all tough and intimidating, you’re kinda cute when you’re trying not to be.” Her eyes flicked briefly to his lips before returning to his gaze. Then, before she could overthink it or talk herself out of it, she closed the distance herself, leaning in and pressing a soft kiss to his lips, lingering there for a moment beneath the warmth of the afternoon sun.

"You wanted me to."he sighed, and shook his head in a joking manner. Brown eyes reflected the sky in them, he watched the clouds rush fast above him, and felt relief that for once they weren't stuck in the busy city. Mikhail breathed, and the air was crisp and smelled of the green grass below him. His attention was caught by her laying down beside him, her words gentle enough to not disturb the peace of nature. He felt his heart beating hard, and he prayed she couldn't hear it.

Mikhail swallowed. His arms were on his sides and, for a moment, his pinky finger moved over the grass, brushing against a warmth of a hand that couldn't be his own. He bit his tongue, and turned his head away from her for a moment to recollect himself. "People usually don't give me a reason to laugh." He admitted, and turned his face towards her again. Basking in the sun, her hair was streaks of black and gold on the grass, and her face was illuminated by the sun shining down. His gaze drifted over her face for a moment, lost in the picture, before looking at her eyes again. There was no need to say it; after so long, she pulled laughter out of him with ease.

Roxy hit the ground laughing so hard she could barely breathe. Grass clung to her jacket and tangled itself into her dark hair, but she couldn’t find it in herself to care. “Cheating?” she repeated between breaths, rolling onto her side to look at him. “Cariño, that’s rich coming from the guy who handcuffed me.” [sweetheart] The accusation dissolved into another fit of giggles as she pointed at him from where she lay in the grass. “You literally arrested me and somehow I’m the cheater?” Her grin widened before it softened unexpectedly. For a moment she just watched him there, sprawled across the hillside with dirt on his clothes and laughter still lingering in his voice. It struck her then how rare this version of him felt. Not the serious detective. Not the guarded Russian who carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. Just… Mikhail. Breathless. Smiling. Playing. The realization tugged another smile from her. “You know…” Her voice came quieter now. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you laugh this much.” She rolled onto her back beside him and stared up at the sky. “I really like it.” A small laugh escaped her again. “Actually, I think I like this version of you way too much.”

The playful smirk that spread across Roxy’s face at the word cruel was immediate and entirely unapologetic. “Ay, pobrecito.” [Oh, poor thing.] The sympathy in her voice was so fake it bordered on insulting. Her hands slipped into the pockets of her jacket as she rocked back on her heels, looking entirely too pleased with herself. “You’re still in trouble, cariño.” [Sweetheart.] Then, lowering her voice just enough to make it sound conspiratorial, she added, “Pero quizás pueda convencerme de perdonarte esta noche.” [But maybe you can convince me to forgive you tonight.] The comment came easily, helped along by her complete confidence that he didn’t understand nearly enough Spanish to realize exactly how shameless she was being.

Then, just as quickly, she shifted gears. Her gaze followed his toward the group gathered around the bar table, and her grin widened into something dangerous. “You need a distraction?” She pressed a hand dramatically against her chest. “Federal boy, you’re looking at one.” The confidence returned in full force, the same oversized ego that had carried her through races, fights, and terrible decisions alike. With a teasing salute, she began backing away from him. “Go find Prynne.” A beat passed before she pressed two fingers to her lips and flicked an exaggerated air kiss in his direction. “And try not to get distracted while I’m gone.” The challenge was entirely unfair and completely intentional. Then she turned on her heel and headed straight for the crowd, already slipping into the effortless charm that made people underestimate her every single time.

He couldn't believe it. It felt like someone pushed the stars close enough for him to grab them only to pull them back as if tempting a hungry dog. He tasted her still, his face was warm, the people were nonexistent and she - with her hands swiping over him - told him to get back to work. How could he when his eyes kept lowering to her mouth again, to the teasing smile and the coy purr of words that followed it?

His shoulder rose and fell with a deep breath, and he brought a hand up to wipe his mouth with the back of it. Turning his head away didn't help his case at all, he looked angry and yet his ears were hot red in color.

You'll have me for the rest of the night.

"Cruel." He grumbled finally, before moving a hand through his hair and glancing at the crowd around them. It wasn't hard to notice some people looking, and he recognized those faces among the crowd because she introduced them to him. He saw the narrowed eyebrows of many, and wished the ground would open to swallow him whole. Inhaling, he looked at her once before clearing his throat into his fist. "Right. I'll go look for Prynne. That..." he wanted to say that girl, but one good look at her made him change his mind really quick. Instead, he said. "... I gathered some Intel. On where he might be. Can you entertain that lot over there," he said, now barely below a whisper as he gestured towards a group of men and women huddled over a bar table. "While I track him? They're his partners, I think. And we need them off course for this."

Roxy’s fingers remained tangled in the front of his shirt, refusing to let go even as the reality of where they were and what they were supposed to be doing finally started creeping back in. The race track, the crowd, the investigation—all of it slowly forced its way back into focus. She let out a slow breath and finally glanced past him toward their surroundings before looking back up at him with a look that was trying very hard to be serious and failing miserably. “We should probably get back to work before somebody notices we’ve completely abandoned the investigation.” The words sounded responsible. The way she was still standing far too close did not. Her gaze narrowed slightly as she straightened his collar with an unnecessary amount of focus. “And you…” She pointed a finger at his chest. “You better keep your hands to yourself.” The warning came with enough sincerity to almost be believable. Almost. A second later, the corner of her mouth twitched upward. “At least until we’re done here.” Brown eyes sparkled with mischief as she finally released his shirt and took a step backward. “Besides…” Her head tilted innocently. “Once this is over, you’ll have me for the rest of the night, cariño.” [sweetheart] “Try being patient for once.”

Roxy watched him answer the phone with an exaggerated look of betrayal, though the corner of her mouth betrayed how amused she really was. The second she caught the apologetic glance he sent her way, her irritation softened into something fond. Rolling her eyes, she pushed herself off the desk and grabbed her jacket. “Yeah, yeah. Go save the world, federal boy,” she mouthed silently, making a dramatic shooing motion with her hand before slipping her arms through the sleeves. As she backed toward the door, she kept her eyes on him, entirely unwilling to leave with any dignity intact. Just before stepping into the hallway, she pressed two fingers to her lips and flicked him an exaggerated kiss, then pointed at him and mimed holding a phone to her ear. Call me. The words formed silently against a grin that only widened when she tapped an imaginary watch on her wrist. Finally, she turned to leave, only to glance back one last time from the doorway. Catching his eye, she flashed him a mischievous smile and a small salute before disappearing down the hall, leaving behind the faint echo of her laughter and, undoubtedly, a fresh headache for him to deal with later.

He spared her a glance but it carried no anger nor annoyance. He wanted to go back there, pull her in. He wanted to feel her heart against his, that wild and untamed beat in her chest that calms down his own. Instead, he faced the receiver and picked up the phone, trying to ignore her taunting words as he pressed it to his ear.
"Hello?" He muttered, and turned his back to her. "No, I can listen. What is it?" As he asked that, he turned to her with apologetic eyes.
