*  his  jaw  tightens,  a  low  exhale  leaving  him  through  his  nose  as  he  looks  at  her,  gaze  hard  but  not  unkind.  *  handled  it,  *  he  repeats  under  his  breath,  like  the  word  tastes  wrong.  there’s  a  brief  pause,  then  his  tone  drops,  edged  with  irritation.  *  you  don’t  get  points  for  doing  everything  alone.  and  i  was  right  there.  *  his  eyes  soften  just  a  fraction,  frustration  tangled  with  something  protective.  *  next  time,  you  wait.  that  wasn’t  a  suggestion.
