I’ve gotten quite a few messages and have also seen posts on my message board about Wattpad’s recent guideline updates. While I don’t have all the answers, I wanted to share my understanding based on how I interpret the changes.
Since I’ve been writing on Wattpad, I’ve made it a habit to read the guidelines whenever they’re updated so I understand the boundaries of writing on this platform. From what I can see, the recent update provides clearer, more direct language, but the core rules themselves don’t appear much different from what they’ve been for years.
I’ve seen concerns that Wattpad is no longer allowing books containing smut. That is not how I interpret the guidelines. My understanding is that content created primarily for sexual arousal, without a meaningful plot or broader story, is prohibited. Content involving minors, incest, and other prohibited sexual material has also long been restricted.
To me, the updated guidelines simply explain these boundaries more plainly. A story having mature or explicit scenes as part of an actual plot is different from content existing solely for explicit sexual material. Again, that is my interpretation, not an official statement from Wattpad.
I also know Wattpad has removed stories and accounts for guideline violations, both recently and in the past. I can’t speak to individual cases or how Wattpad makes those decisions.
One thing I strongly recommend: protect your work. I never write or store my original drafts solely on Wattpad. I write elsewhere and upload to the platform, so I always retain my own copies. Regardless of where you publish, keep backups of your work.
Ultimately, Wattpad owns its platform and determines how its guidelines are enforced. Read the guidelines for yourself, stay informed, and most importantly, protect the stories you’ve worked hard to create. ❤️
