he leaned heavily against a rusted transformer box , his breath coming in short , tight rasps . his jacket was torn at the shoulder , a dark smear of blood soaking through the denim . the thing in the woods had been faster than the lore books suggested .
a sharp click echoed from the shadows near the chain-link fence .
benjamin didn’t hesitate . in one fluid , practiced motion , his hand snapped down to the heavy iron blade tucked into his boot , raising it to defensive alignment even as his jaw tightened against the flare of pain in his ribs . his pale eyes scanned the dark , settling on a figure stepping out from beneath the dripping awning of the control shack .
