I lean over the sink and read the words scribbled between the bathroom wall tiles like the scripture my mother muttered when I was a child and my belly growled and she thought the devil spoke to her
          
          as in I read them like they were something divine, holy
          
          I read them like a prayer, mouth holding the words as I try not to swallow divinity lest my viscera burns 
          
          I read because I have nothing better to do and in my desperation I almost slip and baptize myself in the dingy faded tap water of the bar’s bathroom while angels scream in the background and the music softens the blows with a kiss
