*  has a secret thing for star wars that absolutely no one knows about  ,  not even billy  .  he has a small shrine under his bed dedicated to just star wars memorabilia  ,  & he plans to take this star wars secret to his grave  ,  or college at the very least  .  
            
            *  usually has some sort of grease stain on his clothing  ,  even if he hasn't been to the shop that day  .  sometimes he'll work on his own cars at home  ,  but he also hasn't discovered a spot cleaner / remover yet so 
            
            *  lives in the same trailer park that munson and max do  .  was fast asleep when chrissy died  ,  & at work at the crack of dawn the next morning  ,  headphones blasting music so he couldn't hear max calling even if he'd wanted to  .  
            

*  can't remember names very well  .  it takes him a decently long time to learn them  ,  especially if he's not around the person on the regular  .  he still doesn't know robin's name despite visiting the video store almost every week now  .  
            
            *  did not start getting along with steve until season three  ,  mostly because of billy  .  
            
            *  bullies the kids a little  .  definitely not the ..  authoritative or caretaker figure to them that steve is  .  he's more like a mean friend who  ,  under the right circumstances  ,  can be helpful  .  he'll let them hang around his shop  ,  borrow parts ( in exchange for labor )  ,  etc. etc.  but he'll never get caught missing out on an opportunity to make fun of them  .  
            
            * didn't want to get involved with vecna  ,  and honestly refused to do much until he learned that he was after max  .  that's when he'd decided to get involved  ,  and even then he wasn't in it until she almost died  .  now he's very motivated to murder the..  guy - thing - creature .
            
            *  had a dog  ,  a german shepherd unironically named spike  .  dog was killed by a demodog in season two  .  since then  ,  matt has gotten another dog  .  this one doesn't ride in the truck with him everywhere  .  unlike spike  ,  spike 2.0 usually stays home  . 
            
            

*  chainsmokes like it's no one's business  .  the fumes that come off this man could be considered chemical warfare  .  he's a cleanly guy  ,  hygienic enough  ,  showers regularly  .  still  ,  no amount of soap and water can wash away the lingering cigarette-motor oil-cologne thing he has going on  .  is this a positive trait  ?  if you catch him after work or on a smoke break  ,  three feet is a safe distance  .  
            
            *  he owns three cars  .  they all have different purposes  ,  & they aren't loved equally  .  the first one  ,  the most expensive  ,  is stolen  .  the second is ' borrowed ' from his grandfather who won't miss it  .  the third is a pick up truck he bought used with his own cash  .  
            
            *  drives like an asshole  .  he's perfectly capable of driving safely & calmly  ,  but he actively chooses not to  .  some of it has to do with paranoia ( paranoid of other drivers  ,  doesn't want to crash )  ,  most of it has to do with impatience  .

thing's were fine until he met his kid sister  ,  then everything was downhill from there  .  he learned his grandfather didn't just ' disappear ' and was more than likely killed by a monster  .  then he had to fight more monsters  .  with children  .  that ended  ,  and a year later thing's were fine  .  it was summer  ,  business was great  ,  friendships were building ( stuff w/ billy still going strong )  ,  his life was ..  somewhat normal  .  he'd be off to college sooner than later if he could save up enough money  ,  & the mall was there  .  of course  ,  shit hit the fan again  .  turns out his best friend had gotten taken over by the enemy  ,  russians of all people were involved  ,  and the camaro  ?  gone  .  most importantly  ,  his best friend / died / .  what was he supposed to do with that  ?  over the course of the next year  ,  his old man got sick  .  unfortunately  ,  alcohol does actually do damage to your liver  .  matt's got the fun responsibility of trying to figure out whether or not he should spend all the money he saved for college on surgery for his father  ,  otherwise the man might not live to see him go to college  ,  not that he'd really care  . meanwhile  ,  he's checking up on max regularly whether she likes it or not  .  business is fine  ,  but nothing's changed  .  of course then someone dies  ,  & he's back in the middle of it  . again  .  

born and raised in Illinois to a family with motor oil running through their veins  ,  matt was destined to have a wrench in his hand  .  his own father was raised in hawkins by the resident mechanic  ,  & it was only fair to pass down the tradition  .  after his mom left his dad  ,  mr. montgomery ( the second ) decided to start his own shop in Illinois named after the one his father had himself  .  before the man got his hands on the bottle thing's were going great  ,  but when he fell victim to his alcoholism the business would begin to crumble  .  it was almost perfect timing when the man got the call that montgomery senior had mysteriously gone missing and was presumed dead as the shop he'd opened in his name was on its last leg  .  the next day  ,  the two packed up for the funeral and never returned  ,  moving into the old man's house and taking over the business  .  matt was suddenly the new loner in town  ,  the new loner in school  ,  the guy running the mechanics shop  .  he quickly learned that he wasn't fond of indiana  ,  hawkins  ,  or the people that inhabited it  .  all except one maybe  ,  and that'd be billy  .  he didn't really understand how he got along with the guy  ,  especially since he was such a dick ( not that he didn't exhibit similar behavior )  ,  he just knew that he did  .  he'd fix the guy's car  ,  billy would bring beer  ,  they'd fuck around and hang out  .  they understood eachother  .
