I hate when people try to write about child abuse or abuse in general in their book but have no knowledge or experience. Like, I get it, you don't have to spend four years of your life being abused to write about it but at least do your research. Like actual PSYCHIATRIC research. How it makes them act outside of the home, and I know from experience that everyone is different. Neglect can lead to wanted to be super fun and exciting to get people to like you and give you attention so not every kid with a parent that's never home is going to be a self-harming introvert that wears a dark hoodie and ripped jeans and does drugs. It is possible but it's not EVERYONE. And usually, the grades start to fail with emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse because of the fear and anxiousness of going home. BUT also I know other people who thrived in their classes in an attempt to make their parent(s) proud of them and stop the abuse. {which is SO fucking sad btw}. A good way to learn about child abuse quickly is by watching the Gabriel Fernandez Trials (I think it's still on Netflix). It's a documentary on an 8-year-old little boy being extremely abused by his mother and the mother's boyfriend who end up murdering him. It does show some pretty graphic photos so watch out for that and it is SO heartbreaking. I cried because if how similar it is to my situation but you will cry even if you don't relate to it what so ever. <3
