He couldn't imagine the consequences that awaited him if both men ever heard the truth (though he doubted the girl's communication skills would help her much). Even so, his insecurities, though scarce, held enough power to bring him up with painfully feigned resolve. 
          
          "I may as well be of company."
          
          Helmeppo's head swiveled toward him. "What? No, I said I'd go with him first. You can't just—"
          
          "Fine, you can both come..."
