Chapter 4
The air was filled with the putrid stench of urine and sweat but there was an underlying smell of something else that laced the entire dungeons. Fear. The very air was saturated with it; it clung to the walls and dripped off the bars, making Kaylin's heart beat wildly in her chest.
She was sitting in the corner of her cell - her right shoulder leaning against the wall, her hands wrapped around the bars - and trying to make out the area around her, which was made difficult by the lack of light present. The only source of illumination came from a small window set high into the wall at the end of the narrow corridor between the two rows of gaol cells. It was late evening, however, and the waning light was little help. She could barely make out the outline of her hand as she waved it in front of her face.
She could see the silhouette of a wizened old man occupying the cell in front of her. He sat on the floor, hunched over, as hacking coughs wracked his body every few seconds. Kaylin felt her heart wrench with every cough that she heard, knowing that it was causing him pain and powerless to help him. She could see the light being reflected from his single incisor situated on his bottom jaw and she wondered whether he was able to eat solid food. She had seen people who had lost all their teeth and had to live off soup and broth. She knew that it was possible to buy false teeth, but it was expensive and not may people could afford them.
The floor of the gaol cell that she was sitting on was covered in straw. At least she had been afforded that luxury because she was certain that some of the cells didn't even have that.
