Writing is so much more than a few scratches on a piece of paper. They are more than words that form a sentence. Words have their own life. When an author writes these weird looking scratches that we call letters down on a piece of paper, they take their own life. Soon the little room that you are in takes to form of this whole new world. Writing helps us escape the world even if it is just for a moment. We jump into this time machine and the only energy that it needs is the power of our mind. These words that we see have no pictures to them. No. The author crafts their own tale and paints this image in our brain of this new world. It might have dragons. Or knights. Or maybe it isn't the fantasy world. Maybe the story is in your state. Your city. Your town. A criminal who escaped the county jail and is reeking havoc in you town. Or maybe it is just a simple love story. Maybe it's not any of that. Maybe the world was destroyed by fighting and a corrupt government rose to power and it is your battle to show the world just how corrupt it is. But whatever your tale is, it started with an idea that turned into some scribbles on a piece of paper. And these scribbles took flight. They took flight to form this world just for you.
So writing is so much more than a few scratches on a sheet of paper. Those few scratches might mean something more to another person than it will too you. They have their own tale that they can find themselves in the characters that walk those pages. Maybe it's the way that the character bites their lip. Or just the sheer amount of sarcasm that they have. But they find themselves hidden in the pages.
So maybe writing is just a few scribbles on a piece of paper. Maybe the only thing that makes those letters are the reader. But whatever it is, it is magical. So I find myself asking this question. What happens when the hero lays down his sword? What happens when the hero gives up? What are we left with? Just a few scribbles on a page. Right?
