   it  was  natural  for  him  to  be  sort  of  on  edge  anyway.  with  the  cases  he'd  seen  the  spirits  he'd  came  in  contact  with.  good  and  bad  he'd  always  get  the  chills.  even  now  goosebumps  rose  up  to  the  surface  of  his  skin.  calm.  that  didn't  soothe  him  anymore  but  tried  his  best  to  take  a  breath  even  if  he  felt  like  someone  was  actively  pressing  on  his  chest.  for  him  he  wasn't  even  sure  if  this  was  a  dream  or  not.  he'd  had  visits  from  spirits  at  night  but  the  whole  being  paralyzed  thing  led  him  to  believe  it  was  more  than  that.  vik  couldn't  verbally  reply  but  his  eyes  stuck  to  the  creature.

            the creature  ,  although hungry  ,  was not here for a meal.  he preferred to be close to its choice of prey  —  preferred to see the terror that spread across their face.  but this one had already been struck by fear when he had arrived  —  they were not cruel enough to extend it.  although it appeared as if that wasn't effective  —  even unintentionally  ,  this one was affected by the powers they held.  "calm."  they voiced while taking a step closer  —  gravel sounded through the room.  "you are  —  receptive.  easily affected.  calm  —  will stop."

            the being did not move  ,  for it did not care to be ordered around.  it firmly reminded where it stood  —  continued to stare at the person before them

:  they use actions more than words.  when they do talk  ,  they use smaller words.  they don't talk often  —  language is lost to them.
            
            :  they enjoy being around animals  —  prefer it even.  if they didn't rely on humans to live  ,  they'd probably live their life in the wilderness.
            
            :  when they feed  ,  they lose the bit of humanity they have.  they don't act the same  —  they get drunk off of it.  feeding truly turns them into a monster.

:  won't reveal it's human form until it gets to know you.
            
            :  he doesn't immediately notice people  —  he's blind to someone until he hears them.  he knows where to seek them out  ( ex:  houses )  but he won't see everyone out in public.  once he notices someone  ,  they won't look away until they're gone.
            
            :  not a hostile creature.  will only do things to scare people off.
            
            :  whenever he walks  ,  no matter where it is  ,  it sounds of if they're walking on gravel.
            
            :  when they no longer see you as a threat  ,  they'll merely turn and walk away.
            
            :  the sun doesn't affect them while they're a shadow  ,  but they're sensitive to it when they're a human.  it doesn't hurt them  ,  but it does make them uncomfortable.
            
            :  it likes butterflies.  named himself after one.  they find itself to be something ugly  —  butterflies become beautiful after surrounding themselves in darkness.  they want to be the same way.
            
            :  when they're hungry  ,  they get angry  —  more violent.
            
            :  the shadows that make up their form can move.  not far  —  but they can touch things and even pick things up.  if you know them well enough  ,  you could even read their emotions off of them.  
            
            :  its hat is attached to its body.  it never comes off.  it hurts if you pull too harshly on it  —  just like any other limb.
            
            :  when they're a shadow  ,  you can't touch them unless they allow you to.

FEEDS  off the fear he induces.  it's the only thing it can eat.  sleep paralysis  IS  a requirement.  he gets a thrill out of it though  —  knowing that he causes a type of fear that someone can't run away from.
            
            he does harbor empathy.  he can't feed from someone who's already experiencing fear  ,  so if he stumbles upon someone experiencing a nightmare  ,  he'll linger within their doorway until it goes away.  it's a small mercy  —  guaranteeing that nothing else gets to them until the dream is over.  he won't feed from someone who's already experienced fear.  not just because he feels bad  —  it's makes their fear taste sour.  used.
            
            it can't remember if they were always like this.  a monster  —  something cruel.  they look upon the world and try to fit itself amongst it.  he never fits.  they tend to grow angry on those days.
