            kaliah stopped in her tracks at the sound of the familiar female voice. she stifled a groan as she turned around— sure enough, the other woman was staring at her with what she could only assume was a smug smile.
            
            “well, first of all, i wasn’t trying to be discreet. i didn’t know you’d be here. secondly, i came to return this— a diary, of sorts, i think.” she twisted the small leather-bound book in her hand before tossing it onto the table. “if you’re here for that, save your time. there’s nothing in those pages remotely useful.”

            He shook his head with a click of his tongue. "A woman of your calibre should know things don't work like that." The Russian dropped his gaze to her defensive stance, her arms crossed tight like a wall that refuses to budge. He countered it by tucking his hands into his jacket pockets. "We negotiate now. What is this 'job' you need finishing? Based on how difficult it might be, I'll offer my payment methods." The words slipped off his tongue like honey, his smile proud and daring in once.

            she gave it a moment’s thought. she would’ve argued there was nothing she could possibly offer a vampire— but she wasn’t foolish enough to gamble on that. handing him the upper hand without restraint didn’t sit well with her either. so she crossed her arms and tilted her head, holding his gaze without flinching. “you help me first,” she said evenly, “then we’ll negotiate.”

            The man smiled at her when he heard the stunned silence between her words, his smile only widening at the rest of her sentence. "I can help, there's no doubt in that." He mused, stepping closer. "Depends how you will repay me for my service."

            The woman shook her head. Stupid. And instead of running, she did something even more stupid. She stepped closer.” You need medical attention. You’re losing a lot of blood.” There was a slight hesitation as she made the final choice to do something remarkably stupid.” Sit down. I’ll take care of it.”

            “wonder what gave it away,” she scoffed lightly. “surely not the blood dripping down my arm.” she motioned to it in jest, choosing humour over violence— not because she didn’t want to strike, but because she didn’t have the energy to. she needed to stay low until she healed. the last thing she wanted was to be completely vulnerable and immobile. “can you leave?” she sighed, catching the obvious fear in her eyes. “i’m not going to jump at you the moment you turn.”

            She took a step back, then another, but she didn’t turn and run yet. Her gaze raked over the assassin. She frowned, body tense and poised to run at the first sign of danger.” You’re hurt.”

            “it’s a bit early for that, don’t you think? at least take me out to a nice dinner before you go burning me alive.”

“ just relax , you don’t need to know yet ” he said , lips twitching in amusement as he refused to divulge any more information. his gaze darted around the area as he continued walking , quite casually for the task at hand “ but what i can tell you is that you definitely need to be quieter. ” he said pulling her to the side as he hid them from view
