RAGNAR does not have his own free will. this makes him angry — makes him violent , makes him hate the world. he's powerful , has trained his whole life to be strong enough to take on hundreds — but despite this , one word from the queen could have him kneeling. she holds the power to command him — a power granted by his ancestors foolish mistakes.
( he won't admit it , but the queen terrifies him. being near her makes him tremble — something he won't show unless they're alone , and even then he does his best to hide it. she enjoys it. she could make him do anything — she / has / made him do so much. has made him kill mercilessly , dig the two scars down his own face — she made him kill one of his children as punishment for losing a war. he hates her — he hates his more for not being able to stop her. )
in order to retaliate , he became cruel before she could order him to. threw away his morals sooner than she could tell him to. she doesn't tell him to conquer lands anymore — he does it on his own. having his own will taken away from his is infuriating , so he took it back. if she wants the world , then he'll take it on his own terms.
