@stunna04 I find that sequels should always switch up the formula and not just raise the stakes. If a sequel cannot beat the original then just move on and write something new... But.. If you have ideas that can turn fans of the original on their head and whirlwind in a new audience with a new direction then you are onto a winner. You can always feature your existing characters into other works if they stand out and you can always write a spin off if you would just like to expand citern features of what you have already done. The real question is; do you want to write a sequel because you have great new ideas for it or because it's easier than writing something new? Write whatever your heart is into. As authors we tend to write to be understood in one light or another so just express yourself, be artistic and let nothing hold you back from being true to yourself.
