I was raised a Mormon in Salt Lake City, Utah. I'd always wanted to be a science fiction writer.

When I turned 25 years old, I began to question my direction and worried that all that science fiction was luring me away from true religion. In 1988, I vowed to give up writing and reading science fiction and dedicate myself to getting closer to God.

First, I went on a mission for the LDS church to Taipei, Taiwan to convert others to my faith. But when I got back home a year and a half later, I became convinced that Mormon fundamentalism was the true path and the the main Church had strayed from the right way.

Secretly, I married a polygamist in 1990. For the next 9 years I lived as a polygamist, believing that the world would "end" in the year 2000. Slowly, I would change my mind about this.
