each free practice (FP) lasts for 1 hour.
FP1 and FP2 usually take place on friday, while FP3 takes place on saturday along with the 3 quali sessions. in those free practices, their results don't really matter (i think) and it's kind of the same as quali where the drivers have to try and put in the fastest lap they can possibly drive. it's basically just like a practice session, an opportunity for the teams to test and refine their car setup, and for the drivers to get familiar with the track
