JK Rowling revealed in an interview that Draco behaved antagonistically towards Hermione because he had romantic feelings for her, not before her Muggle-born heritage. Due to this strict upbringing parents, Malfoy was unable to express his true feelings. Rowling added that not unlike Severus Snape and Lily Potter, Malfoy would 'always' have lingering feelings for Hermione and very nearly fought with the Order during the Battle of Hogwarts because of Hermione.

[inserts "Always" gif but with Draco instead of Snape]

AU MEME: Draco dies in the final battle, Hermione takes her own life so that she could be with him, But remains as a ghost haunting the castle instead.

The ghost of Hermione Granger floated above the ground of the old castle that she once called her home. A lot had changed since then and now, even dead, she couldn’t seem to stop the tears coming from her eyes. To her feet lay the love of her life, her soulmate, her everything. Her Draco Malfoy.

            Her dead Draco Malfoy.

She had been looking for him when she had coincidentally stumbled over his already cold, body which was covered in blood. Her heart had suddenly felt frozen and she couldn’t feel it beating anymore. She didn’t want to live in a world without her Draco and had decided that she wasn’t going to either.

Death had been quick and had relived her from the pain. Only to discover that she shouldn’t be pain-free when she had let him die. She was supoosed to protect him from all evil that was never-ending these days. But she didn’t so she should pay the price.

So she kept floating and looking at the dead body that belonged to the man she had loved so dearly. And still did.

            Nothing would ever change that.
