Excerpt from In The Spotlight
“Thanks,” Ash said briefly and turned back to me.
“Are you a Pokémon?”
“Huh?” That was my very intelligent reply.
“Because... I choose you!” Ash said.
I groaned out loud as Asher cracked up. “God, Ash, I’m this close to running out on you,” I threatened. Despite myself, I couldn’t help but laugh along with Ash. His energy was infectious.
Suddenly, he looked at me seriously and his whole demeanor seemed to change. “What now?” I asked concerned. “Do you have a bandage for me?” A cheeky smile started to play on his lips again. Clearly, this was just another pick-up line. “Do I look like a walking First Aid kit, Ash?” I asked sarcastically, my lips starting to form a smile of their own.
“Aren’t you wondering why I need one?” Ash pressed.
I was starting to get slightly annoyed. “Fine Ash, why do you need one?”
“Well, see,” He paused dramatically. “I scraped my knee falling for you.”
I slapped my forehead with my hand and started cracking up again. He was clearly teasing me and oh boy was it working. “You never stop, do you?”
“But seriously. You should know by now I go for breathtaking, dark-haired girls.” Asher paused, and gave me a significant look. “The kind who dribbles ice-cream down her chin when she eats.” He smirked, and then the large, laminated menu went up on the table between us.
I sat with my jaw dropped open, outraged at the implied allusion. I leaned over and yanked the menu separating us. “I don’t dribble ice-cream down my chin when I eat!” I said indignantly, unable to help myself.
“Who said it was you?” Ash’s blue eyes twinkled.
