The movie Hanna has been one of my favourites since I first saw it on Film4 when I was little.
After watching the Amazon Prime television series based off of the movie, I have to say--
The movie was better.
But I gained more overall enjoyment from the television series.
Let me explain. Certain scenes in the series simply did not live up to the movie. For example, the scene where Hanna is questioned in the desert facility, when she hugs that lady and fucking merks her, fucks up the guards, *shit*, steals a gun and methodically takes out each and every camera. The icing on the cake is Marissa Weiglers shock (wonderfully acted by cate blanchette) as she leans back on the chair watching the events unfold. Masterful.
The series comparison?? Lacklustre.
This is only one example of where the action pales in comparison to Joe Wrights action scenes. Continually, the show lacks where the movie succeeded.
But! That guy that plays Erik Heller. Love that dude. I remember him from Altered Carbon, and why immeasurably dissapointed to find who wouldn't be reappearing in season 2. To find him in Hanna, the tv rendition of my favourite movie, I was so fucking happy. And, he bought the character of Erik Heller to life, BEAUTIFULLY.
But Sophie was played differently in the series, with a depth that was more fully explored the only a series can provide the screen time for.
Can't say the same for the character of Joe though.
So. I said that I got more overall enjoyment from the show, even though I seem to be almost exclusively slamming it. Why, you ask? Jusf because it was longer than the movie.
I just love a good plot. Hanna has always been one of my favourite movies of all time, and the fact that it ended was an endless source of contention for me. This series fulfilled one of my greatest desires, and that is for more run time.
