Hi, my name is María and I'm from Dominican Republic. I was reading your story Twitter and I posted a message in January. I just wanted to let you know that I can relate to your situation. I've been hiding in the closet for years now and I've never been able to be in a relationship with anyone because of two reasons.
1. Because Dominican Republic is a homophobic place. It's dangerous to come out because you can be killed if people found out that you're gay.
2. Because my family will reject me more than they already have and I don't want to lose that either. I've never been able to dress like I want to. Because I have a tomboy style in mind, I'm always forced to dress "girly".
I was wondering if we could start talking, because I really need someone who can give me support. The only people that know about me being a lesbian are my cousin Natalia, who is my confident and two of my sisters. I hope that you can be another person who I can talk to about my life, and for the first time, maybe I can listen to someone who can understand and give advice.
Even if you don't want to talk, thanks for reading this.
Sincerely,
María J. Fernández Echenique
