"She asked me to trust her. Now I'm asking you to trust me."

"What I'm about to tell you is the ultimate secret of Fate. As you know, secrets are sacred, fiercely guarded by the Gods. They are revealed to us through the Web of Fate. The crystallization of Lilifae's heart's very last facet, this is the most guarded secret. One you didn't see in my head because Aslinn protected it in our mind in case Jericho would ever try to possess us."

"I'm sorry. I never should have kept this secret from you."

          "Then why did you?"

I lift my head up and meet her eyes. "I just wanted to protect you."

Pain and anger swell to the size of an ocean in her eyes. "Do you know how many times I've heard that in my life? I'm sick of everyone making excuses and tiptoeing around the truth so that they don't upset Fate. I'm so sick of it. Do I not have a say in what is done and said in the name of my protection?"

There is a long pause while I try to figure out how to answer this. "Fate has a way of making us do the last thing we want to. Let me explain what happened to me, and maybe it will shed more light."

Neven walks closer and looks at me with a mixture of sadness and disarming tenderness. "You've never been afraid of being physically hurt. Broken bones don't scare you. But shutting off or running away are your self-protection mechanisms against the kind of pain that hurts the soul. The physical pain of running borrows from the emotional pain, so you don't have to suffer internally quite as much. It's part of who you are. And no one blames you for who you are."

My magic shield explodes, throwing everyone in my path off their feet. The earth shakes with each bolt of magic I unleash. I'm out of control. But suddenly, the ground drops out from under me.

I stare up at the sky as I'm falling. I feel the chill of the wind on my skin. Under me is nothing. The drop is endless. Not even Earth can stop it.

One by one, my thoughts feel less overwhelming—pouf, blown out like candles in the wind. I can't breathe. But I can hear Scott screaming my name as I fall.

"This choice isn't yours to make. No matter how much we both want to make that choice for her, only she has the power to do it. This is something that is willed from above. You're playing with her life. If you break the oath that you have sworn to her with your magic, Fate might be a cruel one."
