Billy didn’t die to the mindflayer. Sure he was hurt as shit, and the coma for several years afterwards wasn’t pleasant, but he woke up. Upon waking, a few important tidbits were given to him.
No one had expected him to wake up.
Neil had been arrested on attempted murder after drunkenly entering the hospital to end his “failure of a son’s” life as he slept and healed. He wouldn’t be able to come after him again anytime soon.
Now, after staring death in the face, Billy had made a choice. Despite his pain, he knew he wasn’t…great in any sense of the word. He had work to do to attempt to be better…and the anger burning in his chest didn’t stop him from promising himself if he woke up…he would change so that thing couldn’t get him again.
But it would take time.
