the abyss

She woke in an abyss, far from her bed in a place she didn't recognize. Her body made from nothing but broken dreams and lost memories.

She longed to grasp at the stars high above, shining amazingly bright against the pitch black background. Her eyes strained as she gazed at the world around her. Darkness, but in its greatest form light. So dark that she saw past it, saw past the invisible barriers that blocked her from her unknown past.

She laughed, cried, sang and danced, smiled and yelled. She saw beauty in its purest form, screaming at her, telling her to leave and stay and everything in between. Her heart beat a million beats a second, for the countless emotions she has felt but forgotten. Stowed away in every little crease of her memory, the little parts she can't quite grasp but has tried to many times. Failed many times, yet in a way succeeded. Would she have made it if she knew whom she was before? What she was like? What she did before everything?
Before the world fell apart at the tips of her fingers? Before her mind took over and left a blank expression on her face as a useless replacement? Before everyone she ever knew and relied on dissapeared without even just the slightest bit of warning?

Is it true? She asks. To herself. To everyone and no one at all. To the empty abyss that is scary yet familiar all the same. She does know this place. She has been here before. Just before it all faded away, this is where she was taken. As if it was a last farewell before her new beginning. And now, now she stands tall and proud. Glancing back and forth at the memories that dance in her eyes.

She remembers. Her friends. Her family. Her life. The love, the hate, the confusing in between. The late nights and the early mornings. The good times and the bad. Everything that has gotten her here, in this very moment. And in this very moment, she realizes that she is not here because she is lost or forgotten.
She is here to be reminded of how unique and precious those memories are. The ones that made her laugh, cry, sing, dance, smile, yell, scream. Those with the people in her past, her present and her future.
The ones that got her to where she is now and will help her to become who she is meant to be. The memories that exist guide her through life as she learns and listens and makes mistakes. The memories she will truly never forget.

She feels alive for reasons she can't explain. "The abyss wasn't a dark place to take me down, it was there to remind me of how I got there in the first place, and how I can get out." She says. To herself, to everyone and absolutely no one.
"The abyss doesn't kill you unless you let it."
