okay answering my own question i wrote below LOL bc ive been thinking abt it :p
(1) i think it can only be called an ethical achievement if understanding changes the way they judge each other without erasing the principles by which they judge at all bc theres a difference between recognising the internal logic of another person’s morality and allowing that logic to replace ur own. understanding should complicate certainty and it should force u to admit that a person can be coherent without being correct and human without being innocent but the moment empathy becomes an excuse to stop making moral distinctions altogether it stops being understanding and becomes surrender
this is where isa and angelo come into play. neither of them are wrong bc theyve misunderstood the other. their conflict exists bc they understand enough to recognise that the other person’s values are not accidental. angelo’s morality is built around power/duty/consequence/survival. isabella’s is built around autonomy/principle/accountability/the dignity of individual choice. both moralities make sense within the lives that produced them BUT that does not make them equally defensible
so i dont think their eventual understanding would be meaningful if it ended with one of them becoming morally indistinguishable from the other bc that just wouldnt be growth - it would be the destruction of the very difference that gave their relationship weight
the real ethical achievement would be for them to understand one another completely and still preserve the capacity to say no, to recognise the wound behind the cruelty without pretending the cruelty is therefore justified, to accept that circumstances can explain a person without absolving them, to love someone without allowing love to become the highest moral authority in the room

(2) principles that survive only in the absence of intimacy arent really principles, theyre preferences protected by distance. but equally a morality that cant be altered by understanding isnt necessarily strength…it may just be rigidity disguised as integrity
so maybe the answer is that understanding becomes an ethical achievement only when it refines their principles rather than dissolving them and when it strips away ignorance, arrogance and easy judgement but leaves behind the boundary between comprehension and consent. otherwise they havent transcended their moral incompatibility, theyve just straight up abandoned it

i have SO many questions pertaining to irrevocable i want to discuss :p
but like i cant post them all together at once, and to be honest idk if anyone’s going to answer (and thats so totally okay!), but i wanna put them out there anyways <3
first question of many:
if two ppl with fundamentally incompatible moral ideas eventually come to understand one another, is that an ethical achievement or an abandonment of the principles that once defined them?

random thought but i wonder if anyone enjoys talking about the philosophy behind books, especially the ones they write, as much as i do…i feel like i could spend hours and hours talking + dissecting the ideas behind irrevocable :p
