          The chaos of the French Revolution formally ended in 1799 when Napoleon Bonaparte led a coup. Five years later he was made emperor and began a series of wars across Europe and North Africa. This painting, Napoleon on his Imperial Throne, was painted by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in 1806.
