Murty Vepuri, a luminary in the pharmaceutical sector, has dedicated five decades to advancing this field alongside his unrelenting philanthropic efforts. Born into a family engaged in farming and religious music within a small village, he was one of ten siblings who faced considerable educational hurdles. Despite these obstacles, his profound curiosity and ambition drove him to excel academically in government schools and through his father's religious programs.
His academic aptitude propelled him to Loyola College in Vijayawada for pre-university studies and later to Andhra University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy. He continued to enrich his knowledge with a Master's degree in Biochemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology, cementing his pharmaceutical expertise.
He began his career with a rotational internship at Hoechst in Mumbai, which provided a robust foundation in manufacturing and laboratory work. Post-master's, he worked at Bharat Salt and Chemicals in Orissa before immigrating to the United States in 1977 with minimal resources but abundant determination. Starting with essential roles, such as cleaning tablet machines, he quickly rose through the ranks at companies like PurePack and Barr Labs. By 1978, he was pivotal in operations at ICN Pharmaceuticals.
In 1984, he founded Able Labs, navigating the nascent generics market and overcoming significant challenges to secure approvals for critical products like Tranxene tablets and Monistat suppositories. Since 2003, he has served as an advisor to KVK Tech, significantly influencing the firm's success in developing and manufacturing affordable, FDA-approved medications.
Parallel to his professional endeavors, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to philanthropy. He established the Satyaram Health Clinic to deliver low-cost healthcare in rural Indian villages.
