⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ [⠀⠀⠀ ⠀pain was a chasm of breath lodged in his throat. a sanctified reprieve came only when she wrapped her arms around him, quieting, if only for a moment, the relentless barrage of thoughts holding him hostage. wülfric kept hold of milena’s bow in his right hand while his left slipped around her with practiced ease, lifting her into his arms. the memory of her messages still lingered, his phone having vibrated insistently against the pocket at his side not long before. even so, he breathed in the familiar scent of her skin and hair, searching for the calm it had always given him. this time, it never came. the ache remained, the strange current coursing through him refusing to settle. the realization gnawed at the corners of his mind, but he buried it all the same. he carried her through the lodging house without a word. rainwater dripped from his coat and boots, leaving a trail of dark footprints across the polished wooden floor. he already knew the servants would grumble over the mess he’d dragged in from the forest once again, though it scarcely crossed his mind for longer than a passing thought. climbing the staircase, he made his way toward their shared bedchamber, nudging the door open with his shoulder before stepping inside. only then did he lower her carefully onto the bed, the bow still resting in his grasp as though he’d forgotten it remained there. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀]

brute. *she hisses the word beneath her breath, though no anger lives within it. if anything, it sounds dangerously close to affection. her fingers tighten in his hair, and this time, she makes no effort to pull away.*

*the sight of her bow in his grasp has milena bolting out of their room. the hunting lodge sprawls across the hillside, built of weathered cedar and dark stone, its broad verandas wrapping around the estate before joining the older manor by a covered gallery. past it, lanterns sway under the eaves, their light softened by the rain. farther off, the grand hall glows through tall windows, where music and conversation drift faintly into the storm. everything smells of wet pine, cedar, and earth freshly awakened by the downpour. it is nothing like the castle she had called home. this place breathes. it feels lived in, wild at its edges, as though the forest itself had claimed it long before men ever did. excitement burns through her, tangled with something she dares not name. the rain finds her the instant she steps outside, soaking the cream green folds of her dress until the fabric clings heavily around her legs. barefoot, she crosses the stone path without slowing, heedless of the puddles gathering under her feet. she reaches him before reason has the chance to catch up. her right hand slips behind his neck, fingers burying themselves in the thick, rain soaked strands of raven hair. somewhere in the back of her mind, she knows there are eyes upon them. servants under the veranda. guests lingering near the gallery. perhaps even that \one\ person watching from somewhere unseen. she does not care. every thought slips away the moment she presses herself firmly against his chest. warmth meets the cold rain between them. her lips find his, lingering only briefly before trailing slow, absent minded kisses along the rough line of his jaw. rainwater gathers against his skin, and without thinking, she tastes the droplets left behind. her arms tighten around his neck as though afraid he might disappear the moment she loosens her hold.*

There was blood on his hands. Not his own. /Never/ his own.

Thor rinsed them beneath the river until the crimson disappeared into the current, though the memory refused to follow. A branch cracked somewhere nearby. He didn’t move.

“I’ve killed enough today” the words hung heavily between them. His reflection disappeared as ripples spread across the water “if you’re here looking for a fight…” he finally stood.

“…pray you’re stronger than the last one.”
