Something really disturbing happened with me here and thought to share it with you guys.
So, I was scrolling through Wattpad’s top 10 trending books in India, and guess what? The number one book is about infidelity—within a family. Just reading the chapter titles was enough to make me feel sick; I didn’t even dare to read the actual content. I can’t help but wonder, what’s happening to this platform?
Wattpad is supposed to be a place for stories and creativity, not... this. Promoting such content by ranking it so highly just makes it more accessible to readers. And you know who’s reading it, right? Underage kids are here too. Many of them don’t have the maturity to recognize what’s wrong with these themes and might even start thinking this is normal or okay.
But it’s not okay. Books like this don’t just affect individual readers; they also have a societal impact. What kind of message are we sending when we normalize such content and push it into the spotlight?
I really feel Wattpad needs to do better. They should take responsibility and review the content of books before ranking them so high. If they can’t ensure that the top books are appropriate for all their readers, what’s even the point of having a ranking system?
Honestly, my respect for this platform has taken a hit. I hope Wattpad takes action to address this because if they don’t, they’ll lose more writers and readers who actually care about meaningful stories.
