Social media affects teens in a negative way. In an article about teens' relationship with social media Rachel Ehmke states “There’s no question kids are missing out on very critical social skills. In a way texting and online communicating it’s not like it creates a nonverbal learning disability, but it puts everybody in a nonverbal disabled context.” This shows that social media enables teens and tends to shorten their social ability. In another article of the same genre Caroline Miller states, “A 2017 study of over half a million 8th-12th graders found that the number exhibiting high levels of depressive symptoms increased by 33% between 2010 and 2015. In the same period, the suicide rate for girls in that age group increased by 65%.” Social media gives teens major depression. It shows them things they want but can’t have (for example: instagram models and their perfect lives) and it drives them (teens) into a state of depression. In conclusion social media negatively affects teens because it causes depression and shortens their social skills.
