Hey, thought I'd help you out on inspiration for your Mulan oc fanfic when I was in my second set of classes of College I found a Chinese legend that is older than the Legend of Mulan itself.

          The story is called Chi Li and The Serpent it is another female Chinese heroine story. Also I can confirm you for in the Mulan movie the Dynasty is the Ming Dynasty a time where scholars were the top dogs and the one of two types of folding fan weren't created until the Ming dynasty came around.
