“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”

Ernest Shakleton’s now famous newspaper ad seeking adventurers to join him on his expedition to the South Pole in 1907 caught Jacob’s attention and inspired his youthful adventurous spirit.

Shackleton set sail months before Jacob did and his exploits would remain unknown until 1916 when he returned to civilization to seek help.

While his expedition was a failure he succeeded in becoming one of the most famous adventurers of the twentieth century, rescuing all of his crew, and becoming more famous than the man who actually made it to the pole successfully.

Shakleton brought back something even more valuable than the “success”. He brought back an incredible adventure story along with his men.

JACOB’S POWDER KEG - the next chapter is out.

After Jacob gets shooting lessons from Mr. Cheney and a warning to back off he looks for his two new friends, Drew and Myra only to discover more intrigue aboard ship. A saber battle in the twentieth century wasn’t what he was expecting.

"I can tell you have the right instincts. Can't just sit around with tension in your belly. Have to do something about it. Have to control those curiosities and prepare for the worst. I get it. Acting brave is the first step to thinking brave. Some might think that's the reverse order but it's not." Cheney took a long swig of his beer and appraised him with a sidelong glance.

He took a long swallow from his own bottle to mimic Cheney. He already drank the brandy his father shared with him and several gulps of the clear fire liquid Drew carried around. Beer was like water in comparison. And the more he thought about what Cheney just told him, if acting brave was a precursor to thinking brave, then drinking might be a precursor to both.

"We should show this to the Captain," said Drew. "This is the proof we need. We can lead them to the dynamite too." Drew took another look at the sketched map and then folded it and put it in his pocket.

"The captain isn't going to speak to a bunch of kids. It's his own detective we're talking about," he said. "And somehow that man from my dinner table, Cheney is his name, somehow he's involved in this whole thing. I found a picture of him in the cabin, standing next to a younger version of Churchill's Shadow like they were friends." Then he turned the page in his notebook and showed a crude sketch of Cheney.

"Churchill's Shadow? What's that?" Asked Drew.

"Just something I've been considering," he said. "When I first saw him I thought he looked like a man from the papers. A Brit navy man named Churchill. Of course it isn't him. This man has that red mark on his head and he had an Irish accent and what the hell would he be doing here....anyway, I was just thinking he was like a ghost or something but it's stupid. Never mind it."
