“Not very becoming behaviour of a woman,” a teasing voice called from above.
Adaline startled, finding herself staring into the eyes of a man who sat perched in a tree just a few yards ahead of where she rode.
“Nor is it becoming to frighten a woman who is all alone in dangerous territory.” She snipped back, unimpressed with the way her heart raced in her chest and how she had to force her hands to relax on the reigns of her horse.
“Ah but you are not just some woman, are you? You would not find a woman easy to frighten travelling Death’s Messenger.” He smirked as if the idea itself was truly entertaining.
“And I suppose you are Jester for you sit in trees all day and yell at all the people who pass through.”
The man lowered his eyes from hers for a moment before he leapt from his perch in the trees and landed before her. Adaline sharply pulled her horse to a stop and he huffed at the man impatiently, mirroring the way she felt.
“I, My Lady,” the man said with a sweeping bow, “do an honourable day’s work looking for game to bring home to my family for dinner. And what do you do for your family?”
His green eyes searched hers, stealing her breath away. They looked like the greenest of leaves, shining in the glowing, warm sun.
“My family is dead.” The words sliced between them, cutting the air of mischief like a knife. The green-eyed man’s brow faltered, his teasing grin disappearing at her words. He lowered his eyes from hers and she immediately missed the warmth of them on her skin.
