Dakota "Kota" Black moves back home after a failed attempt at college.
Realistically, she knew that running off to school with her high school sweetheart would turn sour--she just wasn't expecting him to cheat on her with her own roommate then disappear before she could confront him about it. Luckily, it was her freshman year, and her credits transferred to the only community college that Forks, Washington had to offer, but she still left the rainy streets of Seattle to return to the one place she felt trapped--alone.
Now, she sleeps on the air mattress in the living room in a crowded home that lacks the soul she's craved since her mother's death. Jacob and Billy are the same as ever, the days are bleak, and Dakota is tired and angry--at the world and at herself. She doesn't want to think about Aaron, but he is around every corner, lodged into the patrons at work who ask about him--worry about him. His mother, who she sees often, gives her these looks like Dakota could have stopped it all had she been more attentive, had she been a better girlfriend. They don't know that he cheated, probably wouldn't care if she told them; all they know is there was a fight, then he was gone. That's it. They care only that he is gone, and that she is the only one who saw him before he disappeared.
Dakota just wants to juggle two jobs and forget about her past, but is that possible when she's thrown into a world she never thought existed?
