I think the biggest thing to remember is that past tense is easiest to use for a fluent story. Though, character thoughts are always present. To separate thoughts from narration, use italics!
          That's the most effective advice I can give you.
          Oh, and always read over your work. Everyone makes mistakes on rough drafts!
