Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs caused by bacteria, amoeba, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and with pulmonary edema, the alveoli (air sacs in your lungs) will fill with fluid and prevent oxygen from absorbing into your blood. I could take these words. These harsh, blunt, clinical words, and compartmentalize them, box them, curl them up in my hand and fold them into a textbook, so that they may be read, and memorized, and digested, and forgotten by medical students living in their own flats eating spaghetti and butter, listening to an aging musician. And yet I take these words. These harsh, blunt, clinical words, and I cannot memorize them as students have done and will continue to do. No, they have carved and etched themselves into my flesh, my marrow, my heart. And with every breath in, the cuts inflame, and with every breath out, I think of you.
