Born in San Diego, CA, Patrick Walsh grew up in Boston, MA, after his family moved back to New England when he was two. His father was a naval officer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. He attended Wesleyan University, where he studied Economics and was a two-sport athlete in Football and Baseball. After a back injury ended his sports career, he transferred to Boston College, graduating with honors in Accounting.

After graduation, Patrick earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, passing all three exam levels on his first attempt. He furthered his investment education under the guidance of Professor Greenwald at Columbia University's Executive Value Investing Program.

Patrick Walsh began his career at Prudential Capital Group and Prudential Securities in 1998 as an investment analyst focusing on Commercial Real Estate and publicly traded REITs. He later became a vice president of the real estate, gaming, lodging, and leisure investment banking group at Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc.
