hello again. sorry i haven’t had an update on mourning sun in a while, but i did want to talk about some research i did a lil while ago while trying to world build some of tatooine, since it is fairly important.

firstly, i looked into what inspired the planet, and it’s actually a real place— it’s inspired by the city of Tataouine, located in southern Tunisia.
from there, i looked into the demographics of the area to find out if the people we see are drawn from real like ethnic groups like other planets we see in star wars. and very likely, it is! Tunisia is largely composed of arabs, with a minority of berbers. further looks into various groups revealed something fascinating: the Tusken people of star wars are like inspired by the real life Kel Tamasheq.
the Kel Tamasheq are also referred to by the arab derived name of Tuareg. however, i could not find a consistent translation for this, but most sources said that the term Tuareg was derived from a pejorative, and therefore i will not refer to them as such.

“Kel Tamasheq” is a term approximately meaning “people of [the] Tamasheq [language]” and while there is a consistency in the ethnic makeup of the group, it seems so be a largely self identified group based on language, and possibly lifestyle.
the modern Kel Tamasheq are a trans-saharan semi-nomadic group that speak Tamasheq, a language that fits under the Berber branch of the Afroasiatic Language Family.

          	(part 1/?)

(part 4/4) to me, this suggested that, rather than just an external system of labor exploitation that was transplanted onto the planet, a rigid or at least very pronounced class system might have existed beforehand as a part of the culture.
now, here is where it becomes nebulous— tatooine has a long history in star wars. some of the initial people on the planet were there from a crashed colony ship, then some many thousands of years later, the planet was occupied by the Sith Empire of the High Republic Era. the question emerges then, when did slavery start? does it matter?

anyways i found a Kel Tamasheq band thats pretty popular and they sound super cool. i’ll put a link to a song of theirs i like below. if u have trouble u can just look up Wahouche natareh by Terakaft

          	  (part 4/4)

anakin has severe difficulties following any sort of authority whatsoever, and repeatedly has outbursts over being in some way required to do what someone else wants, except when it fits with his own desires. is this only a result of his personality, or is this in some way related to him being a prior slave on tatooine?
the way in which we speculate on tatooine’s culture and class system further diverges with the second answer.
is the way he responds to authority a maladaptive response stemming from childhood association of any sort of authority over him? or would it a proper response within the framework of the tatooine class structure?
the answer is likely both— the human brain creates trauma responses to real threats, and these often work within the frame of the traumatic situation. however, the brain has trouble rolling back those responses even when outside of the situation. this results in seemingly disproportionate responses to “triggers.”

historically, the Kel Tamasheq had a caste system in which the free status of an individual or prior state of enslavement played a role. this was particularly interesting to me, seeing as in star wars’ tatooine, slavery was very normal and commonplace, and seemingly was more prominent when compared to other on screen instances of slavery.
not to mention that the planet appears to have a relatively rigid class system. there’s clear class stratification— with the daimyo in control of each large town and the greater surrounding area and exerting control over the rest of the planet through allegiances; wealthy landed nobility; artisans and other field experts; most self sustaining farmers that sell excess; menial laborers; and slaves.
in the real world, the proximity to slavery or servitude played a role in what caste you were and how you were treated.
this brings us to a very important detail of star wars: what does anakin skywalker’s behavior suggest about tatooine’s environment and culture, if at all?
there are two ways that this could be read:

one shot idea:
          based off this quote—
“O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a
king of infinite space—were it not that I have bad dreams.”
          — Hamlet, William Shakespeare

and it’s like a one shot following a character who had a bizarrely prophetic dream about the end of something. so like for star wars, maybe a character dreaming vaguely of order 66 or the rise of palpatine in the phantom menace. and it’s just a bizarre and unsettling one shot

love casually having really bad social anxiety when i also have a “we are on a rock spinning in the endless void” mentality.
          it’s like
          “u embarrassed urself”
          “and?”
“they think ur weird and not normal”
          *heart rate skyrockets*
“ffs i just want to play minecraft leave me alone”
