I was born in London and educated in England at St John’s School, Leatherhead, Surrey. In 1948 I was drafted into the British Army for National Service and I was selected for officer training in the Royal Artillery and posted to Hong Kong in the 34th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. After finishing service in 1950 I was accepted by Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, to study medicine. I continued my clinical studies at The Westminster Hospital Medical School in London and in 1956 graduated MB BChir.
In 1958 I joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and immigrated to Canada. I was posted to 442 Search and Rescue Squadron in Vancouver. In 1961 I went into private practice in Richmond, British Columbia. In 1971 I was appointed Staff Physician at the Student Health Service of the University of British Columbia. Because of my interest in Women’s Health, I was invited to be an investigator for The Canadian Committee for Fertility Research and later I was appointed as a member of that committee. I developed a research interest in the development of Post Coital Contraception (MAP) and other women’s health issues. In 1976 I was a founder member of the Canadian Andrology Society (male reproduction). In the same year I was appointed a member of the World Health Organization, Task Force on Male Fertility Control, Clinical Trials Division. In 1981 I was appointed Director of the Student Health Service and in 1989 retired from the university.
After retirement I pursued my passion for single handed sailing in my sailing vessel Tremethick II. From 1985 to 2008, I spent the summers cruising my sailing vessel on the West coast of Canada and Alaska. I have written three books, a novel, A Tale of Whales (originally published by Minerva Press), a biography of, Captain McNeill and his Wife the Nishga Chief, and a novel, Strange Possession at Viner Sound. All these books are set on the west coast of Canada.
