My SF tends to be scientifically accurate with a plausible plot. They are all set in the near future.
I'd suggest reading THE VISITOR first - it tells the story of a dynamic woman astronaut (just like you?) who finds something unexpected in low-Earth orbit. It goes on to change her life and the world.
More bizarre is MINDSLIP which sees all creatures on Earth swap minds after a nearby supernova. Men to women, animals to people, children to adults etc. The main character is a man who becomes a woman and has to battle, not only his new hormones, but also government secrecy and the chaos which has overtaken the world.
The other one is GREEN DOOR in which a man walking his dog saves humanity.
